"What are the determining moments of our lives? How do we know them? Are they ends of things, or beginnings? Are we more or less of ourselves once they've come and gone?" - Charles Wright, excerpt from "Negative Blue."
This April, Tactus SF explores the human experience of transformation—how we face the inevitability of change and grow through into new life. Change often begins when we are challenged or even wounded, forced to bring an end to one way of being. From that, we are faced with the challenge of how to cross the threshold into the next chapter of our life. It happens to each of us, over and over again. Grief; transformation; new birth.
The music of our program echoes this. Pieces by Josquin, Massaino, and de Rore express the grief. Pieces by Gesualdo, Allegri, and Striggio explore the process of transformation. Pieces by Palestrina, Lasso, and Tallis herald our new birth. The concert will also feature instrumental music by guest artists Mane Musica.
Alessandro Striggio - GiĆ nimfa hor voce
Josquin Desprez - Mille regretz
Tiburtio Massaino - Anima mea liquefacta est
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina - Descendi in hortum nucum
Orlando di Lasso - Justorum animae
Cipriano de Rore - Strane ruppi, aspri monti
Carlo Gesualdo - In monte Oliveti
Gregorio Allegri - Miserere mei, Deus
Thomas Tallis - Christ rising again
Free-will donation requested. Proof of vaccination and masks required for entry. The concert will last about an hour with no intermission. Outdoor reception to follow.
